Why Porcelain Veneers?

The simplest reason to choose porcelain is because it is very strong and can be created in a huge range of shades; allowing it to perfectly match your existing teeth or give you the perfect white smile you have always desired.

Of course, most people who decide that veneers are the best option for them are looking to address several issues with their teeth. This can include gaps, damaged teeth and discoloration.

The Process of Porcelain Veneer Fitting

There are several steps which you will need to follow before you can have your porcelain veneers successfully fitted:

  • Healthy Teeth & Gums

The first step is a visit to the dentist to confirm that your teeth and gums are healthy. You will need enough enamel on your teeth to allow the dentist to scrape a little away.

You will also need to be able to talk about why the procedure is important to you and necessary. Finally, you will need to be prepared to commit to a good oral care regime; looking after your veneers is essential.

It is worth noting that veneers do not last forever; you will need to replace them as you age.

  • Initial Appointment

Your dentist will verify the health of your teeth and gums in your first appointment. If there are any issues they will be able to assist you treating these first.

Your dentist will also wish to discuss why this is important to you and that you are aware that veneers are permanent.

Once they are satisfied that you are a good candidate for porcelain veneers they will discuss the process, make an impression of your mouth and take several X-rays of your teeth.

The next appointment will see your dentist removing approximately half a millimeter of enamel from each tooth. This is the depth of the veneer which you will have fitted.

They will then make a secondary impression of your teeth; this will be used to form your custom fit porcelain veneers.

Note: It is possible to have a local anesthetic while the enamel is scraped.

It takes roughly 4 weeks to make porcelain veneers. It is possible to have temporary veneers fitted in the mean time; if you need them.

  • Bonding

The final stage, once the veneers are ready, is to bond them to your teeth. Your dentist will place them in position to confirm the fit and then may shave them a little to ensure it is perfect. The shade of cement used will also be chosen to ensure the veneer matches your other teeth.

You will then need to have your teeth cleaned, polished and roughed before the cement can be applied. The veneer is then put into position.

As soon as you and the dentist are happy with the position a special light will be focused on the porcelain veneers. This will activate the cement and bond the veneers very quickly.

You can then check your bite and comfort.

It is normal to return two weeks later for a follow-up appointment; simply to verify the success of the treatment.
